The lake supports native brook trout, nesting bald eagles, and common loons. Washington County’s Downeast region has the lowest population density east of the Mississippi — just 13 people per square mile — creating habitat conditions that have vanished from most of the eastern US.

Duck Lake in Hancock County provides primitive camping on a remote pond in the Downeast region of Maine. The Downeast area — named because sailing ships traveled “down east” with the prevailing winds from Boston — contains the most intact coastal wilderness remaining in the northeastern United States.
