Duck Lake is a public reserved lot on a pristine 2,000-acre lake in Washington County’s Downeast Lakes region — one of the most undeveloped landscapes remaining on the Atlantic seaboard. The lake supports native brook trout, nesting bald eagles, and common loons. Washington County’s Downeast region has the lowest population density east of the Mississippi — just 13 people per square mile — creating habitat conditions that have vanished from most of the eastern US.

About Duck Lake

Duck Lake public reserved land in northern Maine provides access to a remote lake and surrounding boreal forest. The lake is home to nesting loons — Maine’s iconic bird — and the surrounding spruce-fir forest supports moose, black bears, and snowshoe hares. The area represents quintessential Maine North Woods landscape.

Things to Do

Fishing for brook trout and landlocked salmon, canoeing, loon watching, primitive camping, moose observation (early morning and evening), and birdwatching in the boreal forest.

Duck Lake in Hancock County provides primitive camping on a remote pond in the Downeast region of Maine. The Downeast area — named because sailing ships traveled “down east” with the prevailing winds from Boston — contains the most intact coastal wilderness remaining in the northeastern United States. The region’s wild blueberry barrens, spruce-fir forest, and fog-shrouded lakes create a distinctly Maine landscape.
