Mille Lacs Kathio State Park

9,000 Years of Human History, 35 Miles of Trails & the Source of the Rum River

Mille Lacs Kathio State Park is a National Historic Landmark that combines exceptional outdoor recreation with one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Upper Midwest. Located where Mille Lacs Lake drains into the Rum River, this park preserves evidence of over 9,000 years of continuous human habitation — from ancient Dakota and Ojibwe peoples to fur traders and settlers.

But Kathio isn’t just about history. With 35 miles of trails, diverse camping options, and a prime location on the Rum River, it’s one of Minnesota’s most well-rounded state parks for outdoor enthusiasts.

Hiking & Trails

The park’s 35-mile trail system is among the most extensive in the Minnesota state park network, offering options for every season and skill level.

  • Kathio Landmark Trail: A self-guided interpretive trail visiting archaeological sites, historic locations, and scenic overlooks of Ogechie Lake
  • Touch the Earth Trail: Winds through old-growth forest and a fascinating bog ecosystem — boardwalks keep your feet dry
  • Hiking Club Trail (3.2 miles): Traverses hilly hardwood forest with excellent seasonal color
  • Winter Trails: 10 miles of cross-country ski trails, plus snowmobile and snowshoe routes
  • Equestrian Trails: 27 miles of horse trails with dedicated camping areas

Paddling the Rum River

The Rum River — a designated State Wild and Scenic River and State Water Trail — begins right here, flowing from the outlet of Lake Mille Lacs. The river’s gentle current makes it perfect for family canoe and kayak trips. Rentals are available at the park. The former Buck Moore Dam site is a popular fishing spot for bass, northern pike, and panfish.

Interpretive Center

The Kathio Interpretive Center offers exhibits on both natural and cultural history, bringing 9,000 years of human activity to life through artifacts, displays, and ranger-led programs. Views over Ogechie Lake enhance the experience. Nature programs run throughout the year.

Camping

  • Petaga Campground: Electric and non-electric sites with shower building and 5 year-round camper cabins (heated, with electricity)
  • Ogechie Campground: More rustic, walk-in-style sites for tent campers seeking quiet
  • 70 total family sites (22 with electric), 4 backpack sites, and 10 equestrian sites
  • Group Camp: Near the Rum River access — perfect for scouts and outdoor groups

Visitor Tips

  • Best Time: Summer for paddling and swimming; fall for colors on the Hiking Club Trail; winter for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
  • Observation Tower: Climb the fire tower for panoramic views of Mille Lacs Lake and the surrounding forest.
  • Fishing: Bass, northern pike, and panfish in the Rum River. Mille Lacs Lake is a legendary walleye destination.
  • History: Take time at the Interpretive Center — the archaeological significance of this site rivals any in the Midwest.
