Wildlife & Nature
Koberg Beach State Recreation Site along the Columbia River in the Gorge provides river access in one of the most geologically dramatic landscapes in the Pacific Northwest. The Columbia River — the largest river in the Pacific Northwest by volume — drains 259,000 square miles across seven states and British Columbia. The river supports the largest runs of anadromous fish (salmon, steelhead, lamprey, sturgeon) remaining in the Lower 48 states. White sturgeon — prehistoric fish that can reach 20 feet long and weigh 1,500 pounds — inhabit the deep pools. These “living fossils” have remained essentially unchanged for 200 million years. Osprey nest on platforms throughout the gorge. Golden and bald eagles soar on thermal updrafts along the cliff faces.

Hood River — the windsurfing and kiteboarding capital of the world — is nearby. Mount Hood (11,249 feet) dominates the skyline and offers year-round skiing at Timberline Lodge. Hood River Fruit Loop — a 35-mile scenic drive — connects orchards, wineries, lavender farms, and alpaca ranches. Full Sail Brewing and other craft breweries. Columbia Gorge Discovery Center covers the natural and cultural history of the gorge. Mosier Twin Tunnels — restored sections of the Historic Columbia River Highway — offer car-free hiking and biking.
