Located strategically between Omaha and Lincoln along the scenic Platte River, this 690-acre destination attracts over a million visitors annually with its modern amenities and diverse activities.

Planning Your Budget

Entry Permit Required: A valid Nebraska State Park Permit is required for all vehicles entering the park.

Activity Fees: Ideally, budget extra for activities. The Aquatic Center, Ice Skating Rink, Driving Range, and Theater productions all have separate admission fees. Activity passes can be purchased at the park.

The crown jewel of summer at Mahoney is the Family Aquatic Center. This massive water park features:

  • Wave Pool: A zero-depth entry pool that generates rolling waves for all ages.
  • Water Slides: Thrilling slides including two new 45-foot drops added in 2024.
  • Interactive Water Playground: A safe and fun area specifically designed for younger children.
  • Sun Deck & Concessions: Relax under the sun or grab a snack at the poolside concession stand.

For the best views in the region, climb the 70-foot Observation Tower. Rising high above the treetops, the tower offers sweeping panoramic views of the Platte River Valley and the park’s lush landscape. It’s a fantastic spot for photography, birdwatching, or simply taking in the breathtaking Nebraska sunsets.

Year-Round Activity Center

Fun at Mahoney doesn’t stop when the temperature drops. The Activity Center is a hub for indoor and winter recreation:

  • Indoor Playground: A massive distinctive playground with tubes, slides, and ball pits for kids (socks required).
  • Venture Climb: Test your skills on the 42-foot indoor rock climbing wall.
  • Ice Skating Rink: (Seasonal) An outdoor, refrigerated rink that provides classic winter fun. Skate rentals are available.

Kountze Memorial Theater

Unique to Mahoney State Park is the Kountze Memorial Theater, home to melodramas and musicals throughout the year. The interactive performances encourage audience participation (booing the villain is encouraged!) and provide wholesome family entertainment.

Hiking & Biking

Explore over 6 miles of trails winding through woodlands and scenic overlooks. The trails are a mix of paved paths (wheelchair accessible) and natural surface trails. Bikes can be rented at the park if you don’t bring your own.

Horseback Riding

Experience the park from the saddle at the John Wayne Stables. Guided trail rides are available seasonally (May–September) for ages 6+, while pony rides are offered for younger children (ages 3–9).

Fishing & Boating

Head to Baright Lake or Owen Marina for water activities. Anglers can fish for bluegill, catfish, and bass (permit required). Paddleboats are available for rent at the marina for a leisurely cruise on the water.

Go Ape! Ropes Course

For adrenaline seekers, the Go Ape! Treetop Adventure course features high ropes, zip lines, and Tarzan swings high above the forest floor. A separate booking and fee are required.

Peter Kiewit Lodge

Perched on a hill overlooking the Platte River, the lodge features 40 guest rooms (each with a private balcony or deck), conference rooms, and a full-service restaurant. It’s the perfect choice for those who want nature without sacrificing comfort.

Luxury Cabins

Dozens of heated and air-conditioned cabins are available year-round. They range from cozy 2-bedroom units to large 6-bedroom group cabins perfect for family reunions. All cabins come with fully equipped kitchens, linens, and TVs.

Camping

Sites: ~148 camping pads with 20/30/50-amp electrical hookups. Amenities: Modern shower houses, dump stations, and laundry facilities. Reservations: Highly recommended, especially for summer weekends and holidays. Can be made up to a year in advance.
