Things to Do
DEC runs Moffitt Beach as a campground and day-use area on Sacandaga Lake, with 260 campsites under 70- to 80-foot white pines, many at the water’s edge. There is a sand beach with a bathhouse (swimming is not lifeguarded), a boat launch for motorboats, canoes and rowboats, a picnic area with a pavilion, and an informal nature trail. The lake holds walleye, rainbow and brown trout, smallmouth bass and perch, and the bordering Jessup River Wild Forest has miles of hiking trails, including the popular Fawn Lake Trail.
Best Time to Visit
The campground is open from May 15 to October 12. Swimming is prohibited from half an hour before sunset to half an hour after sunrise.
Visitor Tips
Moffitt Beach is a campground of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, not a New York state park. Camping costs $22 a night, plus $5 a night for out-of-state residents, and you reserve through ReserveAmerica. Untreated firewood may come only from within 50 miles of the campground, and fishing licenses are not sold here, so buy one online or by phone before you arrive.
