Boating is a popular activity at Ponca State Park, thanks in large part to its location along the scenic Missouri River. The park offers visitors access to a variety of boating opportunities, including motor boating, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. It also has a boat ramp to help you launch your vehicle onto the water. If you did not bring a watercraft or vessel with you, the park does offer boat rentals, including kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats. All visitors, regardless of their experience, should be aware that the Missouri River can be unpredictable. So they should always be aware of changing weather conditions and strong currents. Additionally, all boats must comply with state regulations regarding safety equipment and boater education requirements.
Fishing at Ponca State Park
If you are an avid angler you will enjoy the opportunities available to cast a line at Ponca State Park. The Missouri River and its tributaries are home to numerous fish species including sauger, bass, catfish and walleye that regularly bite. Anglers can choose to fish from the shore or from boats out on the water. However, they will need a valid state fishing license in order to do so. Ponca State Park offers a variety of hiking opportunities along its many trails for visitors who want to stretch their legs. Overall there are more than 22 miles of hiking trails that wind their way through the park’s scenic landscapes of woodland areas, open meadows, and along the banks of the Missouri River. Patrons can choose from a variety of hiking experiences, from shorter, family-friendly hikes to longer, more challenging treks that offer stunning views of the river and the surrounding countryside. The park also offers interpretive nature trails, where visitors can learn about the plants, animals, and geology of the area. If you intend to go hiking it is worth being prepared by wearing appropriate footwear and clothing relating to the season, and taking lots of water and snacks with you.
Birding at Ponca State Park
If you are a birder, you will be pleased to hear that Ponca State Park is a prime location for birding. Overall there are more than 200 species of birds recorded in the area, many of which can be seen in the park at various times of the year. Camping
Camping is a popular activity at Ponca State Park, with several options available for guests. Overall, the park features both primitive and modern campsites, including tent and RV camping, as well as cabins and group camping areas. These camping facilities include 68 electrical campsites that come with water hookups, 45 non-electric campsites, and two group camping areas. All of these modern campsites are equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. There are also very good shower and restroom facilities available throughout the campground. If you are looking for a more rustic experience, the park also offers a number of primitive camping areas. These are located throughout the park and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. They do not include any amenities, so those wanting to stay here must bring their own water and firewood. By contrast, should you want a more luxurious camping experience, there are eight modern cabins available that provide some of the comforts of home in a picturesque natural setting. Each cabin is equipped with a full kitchen, bathroom, and comfortable sleeping quarters, as well as outdoor amenities such as picnic tables, grills, and fire rings.

Wildlife & Nature
Ponca SP — 2,400 acres on the bluffs above the Missouri River. The park is part of the Missouri National Recreational River — one of the last free-flowing stretches of the Missouri. The park’s loess hills, hardwood forest, and river support bald eagles, white-tailed deer, and wild turkeys. Lewis and Clark camped near here in 1804.
