The Best View of the Bridge

Straits State Park is defined by its unparalleled views of the Mackinac Bridge. Located in St. Ignace on the north side of the straits, this park offers campers a front-row seat to one of the world’s greatest engineering marvels. It serves as a perfect base camp for exploring Mackinac Island and the Upper Peninsula.

🚧 Memorial Renovation: The Father Marquette National Memorial within the park is closed for major renovations (learning commons & pow wow grounds) through July 2026.

Camping with a View

The park’s 255 campsites are divided into upper and lower loops. The Lower Riverfront Loop is the most coveted.

  • Bridge View Sites: Several sites offer direct, unobstructed views of the bridge. These book 6 months in advance.
  • Hookups: modern restrooms and electrical hookups are standard at most sites; some waterfront sites are semi-modern.

Park Highlights

While the bridge is the star, the park offers more:

Feature Description
Observation Platforms Several decks allow for perfect photos of the bridge day and night.
Hiking Short trails connect the campground to the waterfront and observation points.
Father Marquette (Currently undergoing updates) Tells the story of the 17th-century missionary/explorer.

Mackinac Island Access

Ferry docks to Mackinac Island are located just minutes away in downtown St. Ignace. Many visitors camp here and take day trips to the island.

Can I see the bridge lights from my tent?

Yes! The Mackinac Bridge is illuminated at night. From the lower campground and beach area, the view of the glowing span reflecting on the water is unforgettable.

Is there a beach?

There is a pebbly beach along the Straits of Mackinac. It’s great for wading and rock hunting, but the water is often chilly.

How far is the ferry?

The St. Ignace ferry docks (Shepler’s and Star Line) are less than 2 miles from the park entrance.
