Sweetwater Lake
Sweetwater Lake is not an operating Colorado state park. Colorado announced it as the state’s 43rd state park in 2021, but the land belongs to the White River National Forest. The U.S. Forest Service is still reviewing a 20-year special use permit that would let Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) manage the area, and CPW does not list Sweetwater Lake among its state parks.
The Forest Service bought the 486-acre Sweetwater Lake property on August 31, 2021, after The Conservation Fund had held it for a year. Its Sweetwater Lake Recreation Management and Development Project would amend the forest plan and authorize the CPW permit. The environmental review began in May 2024, and the Forest Service has not yet made a decision. As of October 2026.

Sweetwater Lake lies in Garfield County, about 12 miles northwest of Dotsero. The park’s coordinates are 39.7456, -107.1008.
