Ward Charcoal Ovens State Park is one of the more unique state parks in Nevada.
Situated in a remote part of the state, about a four hour drive from Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, the park is home to six beehive-shaped charcoal ovens.
Constructed in the latter part of the 19th century to produce charcoal for the silver mining industry, the ovens are considered to be some of the best-preserved examples in the western United States. They were constructed of local limestone and were capable of producing over 20,000 bushels of charcoal each year.
Today, visitors can explore the ovens and learn about the history of the silver mining industry in the region.
Additionally, they can explore hiking trails that showcase scenic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, as well as opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife viewing.
Given its remote location, unique historical and natural features, Ward Charcoal Ovens State Park is a fascinating destination for anyone interested in Nevada’s rich history and stunning outdoor landscapes.

Ovens at Ward Charcoal Ovens State Park

The ovens were used to convert wood into charcoal by heating it in a low-oxygen environment. The resulting charcoal was then transported by wagon to nearby smelters for use in processing silver ore.
While the ovens were only in operation for less than a decade before the silver market declined, their unique design and construction have made them a popular attraction for visitors to the park.
