A.W. Marion State Park
A hidden gem located just 30 miles south of Columbus, A. W. Marion State Park offers 310 acres of peaceful Ohio woodlands centered around the serene 145-acre Hargus Lake. Named after the first director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, this park provides an ideal escape for anglers, paddlers, and hikers looking to enjoy Central Ohio nature without the heavy crowds of larger parks.

Things to Do at A. W. Marion State Park
Despite its compact size, A. W. Marion packs in a variety of recreational activities. Guests love to boat, hike, bike, fish, camp, picnic, and bird watch at this beautiful Ohio state park.
Boating and Paddling on Hargus Lake
The centerpiece of the park is Hargus Lake. This quiet body of water only permits hand-powered vessels and boats with electric motors, preserving a tranquil environment perfect for kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. The park provides one launch ramp, and boat rentals are offered seasonally at the marina. Boaters are also permitted to swim from their boats in special designated “boat swim” areas, as there is no traditional sandy beach.
Fishing
Pack your angling gear for a relaxing day of fishing on picturesque Hargus Lake. The lake is stocked regularly and supports a healthy population of largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish. Excellent shoreline access is available around the entire lake. Ice fishing is also popular here during the winter. Ensure you have an Ohio fishing license.
Hiking and Mountain Biking
A. W. Marion features miles of scenic trails winding through its rolling woodlands and prairies:
- Hargus Lake Trail: A beautiful 3.9-to-5-mile loop (depending on detours) that completely encircles the lake, offering constant water views, moderate elevation changes, and excellent birdwatching opportunities.
- Multi-Use Trail: A 7.3-mile rugged trail open to both hikers and mountain bikers, featuring dirt paths that challenge off-road enthusiasts.
Winter Activities
Thinking about visiting during the winter? There’s lots to do when the ground is frozen. Sledding, ice skating, and ice fishing draw locals out during the off-season, making the park a true year-round destination.
