Activities

There are a number of activities available to Lone Mesa State Park explorers. Here is a sampling of the many activities at Lone Mesa park:

OHV At Lone Mesa State Park

Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV) are allowed for use within Lone Mesa State Park. These vehicles should stay on the established motor vehicle routes throughout the park. Residents can renew their registrations or get their first-time registration at the park office, while out of the state permits can be purchased wherever they are sold, as well as online through the CPW store. For more information, check out the state park website or find out more by calling their office.

Horseback Riding At Lone Mesa State Park

Visitors to Lone Mesa State Park with permits may bring horses. There are no overnight facilities available in the park, however, park staff will happily help visitors find horse-safe camping locations outside of the park. Keep in mind that horseback riding is limited to those welcome in the park for hunting purposes and that all hay brought into the park should be certified weed-free, to help protect the natural flora and fauna that make their home in the park.

Hunting At Lone Mesa State Park

Permitted hunting access is currently the only way to experience Lone Mesa State Park up close and personal. Each year, a limited number of archery, muzzleloader, and rifle permits are awarded to hunters. To find out more information about the hunting permit drawing odds, as well as the hunting dates for each season, check out the state park hunting page. It is worth noting that 10% of the permits are set aside for use by combined Native American tribes and bands, allowing them to continue to hunt on historic hunting grounds. Not only does this practice help preserve a cultural way of life, but it also helps balance the animal populations in the area.

Pets At Lone Mesa State Park

Dogs are allowed within the park so long as their waste is properly disposed of and they are kept on a 6 foot or shorter leash at all times. It is worth noting that hunting alongside dogs is not allowed and that dogs should only be brought to activities that you would usually bring dogs to. Horseback riding is allowed for hunters, so long as they bring certified weed-free hay for their horses, clean up all waste, and are aware there are no overnight facilities in the park.

Camping At Lone Mesa State Park

While there is no camping within Lone Mesa State Park, hunters can camp in the State forest land nearby, giving easy access to the hunting grounds within the park. Park staff are happy to provide information about these camping locations, so be sure to call their office or check out their website for more information.
