Frequently Asked Questions

Are there really wild Venus flytraps here?

Yes! Carolina Beach State Park is one of the very few places on Earth where Venus flytraps grow naturally in the wild. They’re native only to a small coastal region within about 60 miles of Wilmington, NC. The 0.5-mile Flytrap Trail lets you see them in their native carnivorous bog habitat.

What’s special about the marina?

This is North Carolina’s only state-managed marina! The 54-slip marina provides direct access to the Cape Fear River and Intracoastal Waterway. It offers fuel, supplies, laundry, and showers. Slips can be reserved up to 11 months in advance.

What is Sugarloaf Dune?

Sugarloaf Dune is a 50-foot sand dune that historically served as a navigational landmark for sailors entering the Cape Fear River. The 2–3 mile Sugarloaf Trail leads to it through diverse habitats including pine savannas, cypress swamps, and coastal evergreen forests.

Can I take flytraps home?

Absolutely NOT! Venus flytraps are on North Carolina’s Protected Plants List. Poaching is a serious crime that threatens this already vulnerable species. Stay on designated trails and never remove any plants from the park.

How far in advance can I book?

Camping and cabin reservations can be made 6 months in advance. Marina slips can be reserved up to 11 months ahead—essential for peak boating season!
