Sandy Beaches, Dramatic Bluffs & Lake Ontario Sunsets

Fair Haven Beach State Park occupies a stunning stretch of southeastern Lake Ontario shoreline in upstate New York, where dramatic glacial bluffs tower above sandy beaches and hilly woodlands roll inland. With 1,500 feet of sandy beach, diverse camping options, and miles of trails through ravine-carved landscapes, this park offers a true Great Lakes beach experience just two hours from Syracuse.

The park’s defining feature is its geology — the same glacial forces that carved the Finger Lakes sculpted this shoreline into dramatic bluffs and deep ravines, creating a landscape far more rugged and scenic than most lakeshore parks. Sunsets over Lake Ontario from the bluff campsites are legendary.

Swimming & Beach

The park’s 1,500-foot sandy beach is one of the finest on Lake Ontario, with 600 feet designated as a guarded swimming area (Memorial Day through early September). The water deepens gradually from shore, making it ideal for families with children. Diving boards add to the fun. The beach area also features picnic facilities and easy trail access.

Camping

Fair Haven offers some of the most scenic and varied camping in the New York state park system, with 184 campsites spread across three distinct areas.

  • Bluff Campground: The premium spot — perched atop glacial bluffs with panoramic Lake Ontario views. The only section with electric hookups (46 sites). Wake up to sunrise over endless water.
  • Drumlin Campground: The largest loop with well-shaded, spacious sites nestled among wooded hills. Great for tent campers seeking privacy.
  • Lakeview Campground: Combines proximity to the beach with a quieter, more natural setting.
  • Cabins: Full-service and winterized cabins are available for those preferring four walls and a roof.

All camping areas feature restrooms with showers, picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica.

Hiking Trails

  • Lake Shore Trail (1.5 miles): Follows the dramatic bluff edge before descending to a secluded rocky beach. Outstanding lake views the entire way.
  • Fair Haven Beach Loop (~5 miles): A medium-difficulty circuit through wooded hills, open meadows, and along the Lake Ontario shoreline. Excellent for bird watching.
  • Ravine Trails: Shorter paths descending into the park’s glacially carved ravines, where streams cascade through lush fern-filled hollows.

More Activities

  • Fishing: Lake Ontario offers world-class salmon, trout, and bass fishing. Sterling Creek runs through the park during salmon runs.
  • Boating: A boat launch provides access to Lake Ontario. Note: Great Lakes conditions can change rapidly.
  • Winter: Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on groomed trails with spectacular frozen lake views.

Visitor Tips

  • Best Time: July–August for swimming; September for salmon runs; October for fall foliage against the lake.
  • Book the Bluff: Bluff Campground sites sell out quickly — book months ahead for summer weekends.
  • Layer Up: Lake Ontario creates its own weather. Even in summer, bring a jacket for cool lake breezes.
  • Pets: Welcome on leash in camping areas and on trails. Not permitted on the swimming beach.
