Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site along the John Day River sits in the heart of eastern Oregon’s ranching country — surrounded by the Blue Mountains and the wide valley that John Day himself traversed as part of the Astor Expedition in 1812. The John Day River — the longest undammed river in Oregon (281 miles) — supports one of the last self-sustaining wild populations of spring Chinook salmon and summer steelhead in the Columbia Basin. Mule deer browse the riverside willows year-round. Rocky Mountain elk are frequently spotted at dawn and dusk in the adjacent meadows. Great blue herons fish the shallow riffles. Belted kingfishers hover and plunge for trout. The river’s wild, undammed character makes it irreplaceable for Pacific salmon conservation — a living remnant of what all Columbia Basin rivers once supported.
