About Iron Mission

Iron Mission State Park Museum in Cedar City preserves the history of the 1851 Iron Mission โ€” Brigham Young’s attempt to establish iron production in the Utah Territory. Mormon settlers from England and Wales brought ironmaking skills but struggled with local ore quality. The museum houses an outstanding collection of horse-drawn vehicles โ€” over 100 wagons, carriages, stagecoaches, and sleighs from Utah’s pioneer era.

Things to Do

Viewing the 100+ historic horse-drawn vehicles, exploring Mormon pioneer ironmaking history, visiting Cedar City’s Utah Shakespeare Festival (Tony Award-winning), and gateway to Cedar Breaks National Monument.

Cedar City hosts the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival (June-October). Cedar Breaks National Monument (25 miles) features a 2,500-foot-deep amphitheater of red rock. Brian Head Ski Resort (30 minutes) offers winter skiing at 11,000 feet.

Nature & Wildlife

Cedar City sits at the junction of the Colorado Plateau and the Great Basin โ€” two of America’s most distinctive landscapes. The surrounding mountains (11,000+ feet) support aspen, spruce, and fir forests, while the valley floor is semi-arid sagebrush. Mule deer, elk, and wild turkeys are common. The Iron Springs area contains deposits of magnetite and hematite that attracted Mormon pioneer ironmakers.
