Mt Philo State Park
🏔️ Vermont’s Oldest State Park — 968-Foot Summit Views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks — Hike or drive to a panoramic mountaintop with sunsets over the lake, lean-to camping, and 100 years of Vermont state park history — Chittenden County, Vermont
Mount Philo State Park is Vermont’s oldest state park, established in 1924 when Frances Humphreys donated the land to the state. The park’s 968-foot summit provides one of the most accessible and rewarding panoramic views in New England — Lake Champlain stretching below, the Adirondack Mountains of New York rising to the west, and the Green Mountains rolling to the east. It’s arguably the best sunset viewpoint in the Champlain Valley.
What makes Mount Philo special is its accessibility. Visitors can hike to the summit via a moderate trail or drive up a steep, winding access road that brings you directly to the mountaintop picnic area and overlooks. A small campground with 10 sites (including lean-tos) sits near the summit, offering the rare opportunity to wake up above the clouds with the Adirondacks as your morning view.
