🧜‍♀️ Florida’s Legendary Underwater Wonderland — Home of the world-famous mermaid shows since 1947, crystal-clear 72°F springs, and Florida’s only spring-fed waterpark. A one-of-a-kind experience. Updated January 2026.

The legendary Weeki Wachee mermaids perform underwater in crystal-clear 72°F springs

There’s nowhere else on Earth quite like Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. Since 1947, this Florida treasure has enchanted visitors with its legendary underwater mermaid shows—graceful performers breathing through hidden air hoses while dancing, flipping, and telling stories in crystal-clear 72°F spring water. It’s part roadside attraction, part natural wonder, and completely magical.

But Weeki Wachee is far more than kitsch. The park protects one of Florida’s most voluminous first-magnitude springs, pumping 117 million gallons of pristine water daily into the Weeki Wachee River. The spring itself is one of the deepest in the United States, and the resulting river—fed entirely by this underground aquifer—offers some of the clearest kayaking water you’ll ever paddle. Manatees gather here in winter, turtles bask on logs, and alligators patrol the banks.

Add in Buccaneer Bay—Florida’s only spring-fed waterpark with slides, a lazy river, and swimming in the spring head itself—and you have a destination that entertains everyone from nostalgic grandparents who saw the mermaids in the 1960s to kids experiencing magic for the first time.

Mermaid Shows

The world-famous Weeki Wachee Mermaids have been performing underwater since 1947, making this one of America’s longest-running attractions. The shows take place in a 400-seat underwater theater with glass viewing windows built into the spring basin, allowing audiences to watch the performers swim, flip, and even eat and drink—all while breathing through hidden air hoses 16 feet below the surface.

The attraction was created by Newton Perry, a former U.S. Navy “frogman” who developed underwater breathing techniques during World War II. Perry trained young women to use his air-hose method and built the original underwater theater. In the 1950s, ABC purchased the attraction and expanded the theater to 500 seats, and Weeki Wachee became one of Florida’s most iconic roadside destinations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do the mermaids breathe underwater?

The mermaids breathe through hidden air hoses positioned throughout the underwater theater. This technique was developed by founder Newton Perry, who trained Navy frogmen during WWII. The performers are highly trained to use these hoses while appearing natural and graceful—it takes months of training to master.

Can I swim in the actual spring?

Yes! At Buccaneer Bay, you can swim in the spring-fed water. The temperature is a constant 72°F year-round—refreshing in summer, surprisingly warm in winter. The water is the same crystal-clear spring flow used for the mermaid performances.

When is the best time to see manatees?

November through March is manatee season. When Gulf waters cool, manatees gather in the warm spring waters of Weeki Wachee. The best way to see them is by kayaking the river—you might paddle right past groups of these gentle giants.

Does the park close for capacity?

Yes—especially on summer weekends, holidays, and spring break. When the park reaches capacity, no new visitors are admitted until others leave. Arrive by 9 AM during peak season to ensure entry.

Are the mermaid shows appropriate for all ages?

Absolutely! The mermaid shows are family-friendly and enchanting for all ages—from toddlers seeing real “mermaids” for the first time to grandparents who visited in the 1960s. The shows run about 30 minutes.

How deep is Weeki Wachee spring?

Weeki Wachee is one of the deepest springs in the United States. Divers have explored to depths exceeding 400 feet without reaching the bottom. The underwater theater where mermaids perform is at approximately 16 feet.
