Chatfield Reservoir offers stunning Rocky Mountain views just minutes from Denver

Just 25 miles southwest of downtown Denver, Chatfield State Park proves you don’t need to drive to the mountains for a Colorado outdoor adventure. This 5,381-acre recreation paradise centers on the glittering Chatfield Reservoir—a 1,355-acre lake that draws boaters, swimmers, anglers, and paddleboarders seeking escape from the city. On any summer weekend, the water buzzes with sailboats, jet skis, and kayaks, while families stake out spots on the swim beach.

But Chatfield is far more than a reservoir. Over 26 miles of trails wind through cottonwood groves, prairie grasslands, and along the shimmering shoreline—welcoming hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders alike. The park’s 69-acre off-leash dog area is the largest in Colorado, a canine paradise where dogs can run, swim, and socialize. And when the sun sets behind the Front Range, 197 campsites offer front-row seats to alpenglow on the Rockies.

With its full-service marina, model airplane field, hot air balloon launches, and easy Denver access, Chatfield has become Colorado’s most-visited state park—welcoming 1.6 million visitors annually. Come for an afternoon paddleboard session or stay the weekend; either way, the park delivers a Rocky Mountain experience without the mountain drive.
