Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Big Red Lighthouse?

You can see Big Red from Holland State Park (the best viewpoint is from the north side!), but you cannot walk to the lighthouse. It’s on private property. Limited access for walks to the lighthouse may be offered during summer, but check current availability—it’s not guaranteed.

What’s the beach like?

Holland State Park features a wide, beautiful sugar-sand beach on Lake Michigan. The sunsets are legendary! Check the beach flag warning system before swimming—red flags mean unsafe water. A live webcam shows current beach conditions.

Which campground should I choose?

The Holland Beach Campground (98 sites) is closer to Lake Michigan with paved sites. The Lake Macatawa Campground (211 sites) is larger with grass/gravel sites. Both offer electric hookups. For the ultimate experience, book the Whitetail or Beacon cabins with Big Red lighthouse views!

Are dogs allowed?

Yes! Dogs are allowed in a designated dog beach area along Lake Macatawa (not Lake Michigan beach). They must be on a 6-foot leash at all times.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. All visitors need a Recreation Passport for entry. You can purchase it with your Michigan vehicle registration or at the park entrance.
