Lake Murphysboro State Park — 1,022 acres surrounding a 145-acre lake — provides recreation in the forested Shawnee Hills of Jackson County. The park’s mature oak-hickory forest, created by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, has grown into an impressive second-growth forest. The CCC built the dam, lake, stone shelters, and trails that remain in use today — testament to Depression-era craftsmanship. The lake supports largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and crappie. Bald eagles perch in lakeside trees during winter.
