Frequently Asked Questions
What is Georgia’s fall line?
The fall line is a geological boundary where the hard Piedmont rock meets the soft Coastal Plain sediment โ rivers drop over rapids at this transition, providing waterpower that built Georgia’s first cities. Augusta, Milledgeville, Macon, and Columbus all sit on the fall line. The falls powered textile mills that drove Georgia’s industrialization. The fall line also marks a biological transition โ different ecosystems exist above and below it.
