Martin State Park in Jeff Davis County provides recreation in Georgia’s rural Coastal Plain — the flat, sandy landscape that was ocean floor 50 million years ago. Jeff Davis County sits in the Altamaha River basin — the “Little Amazon” of Georgia, hosting the highest biological diversity of any Atlantic Slope river system. The Altamaha supports the highest density of freshwater mussels in the Southeast, including several species found nowhere else on Earth.
