Buffalo Rock State Park is a public state park in Illinois near Ottawa in LaSalle County. It occupies a bluff that was once an island in the Illinois River, with overlooks above the water and the Effigy Tumuli earthworks alongside.

Buffalo Rock is a bluff that was once an island in the Illinois River, and the view from the top is still the reason to come: the River Bluff Trail runs high above the water with two observation decks, while the Woodland Trail drops into the oak, hickory and walnut forest behind. But the park’s signature is stranger than any overlook. Along the mile-and-a-half bluff lie the Effigy Tumuli — five enormous earth sculptures of river creatures, built as a coal-mine reclamation project on land donated by the Ottawa Silica Company: a 2,070-foot snake, a 770-foot catfish, a 140-foot frog, a water strider and a turtle. They recreate the effigy-mound tradition that native peoples practiced here more than 3,000 years ago, and a trail links all five.

And yes, the name is literal: two American bison live in a pen and grazing area across from the baseball diamond. Round out a visit at the picnic areas — tables, grills, drinking water, a playground by the large shelter, and a stone-fireplace shelter you can reserve.

Best Time to Visit

The Effigy Tumuli read best when the grass is short and the light is low — early spring and late fall, or early morning in summer, when the shapes stand out from the bluff-top vantage. Fall color along the Illinois River is the crowd-pleaser, and winter strips the Woodland Trail down to bare structure and long river views. The park is small (298 acres), so pair it with a day at the canyons of Starved Rock or Matthiessen State Park just downriver.

Visitor Tips

No tickets, no entrance fee — Illinois state parks charge nothing at the gate, and Buffalo Rock has no beach (the only site type that does). Camping is the honest asterisk: there is no campground here. Three primitive sites — fire ring only, no water, no restrooms, reachable only on foot or by bike — sit along the I&M Canal trail between Buffalo Rock and Utica, first come, first served. For a real campground, Starved Rock‘s 133 Class A Premium electric sites with showers are the nearest option — as of August 2026.

The park sits about 3 miles west of Ottawa at 1300 North 27th Road, off Dee Bennett Road (815-433-2224). The bluff has a long memory: La Salle and Tonty gathered some 4,000 Native warriors here in the winter of 1682–83, and Chicago’s Crane Company ran an employee sanatorium on the rock from 1912 before deeding the land to Illinois on November 15, 1928 — on condition it remain a state park forever.

Buffalo Rock State Park — perched on a bluff 100 feet above the Illinois River — is best known for its Effigy Tumuli — five massive earth sculptures (1983-1985) created by artist Michael Heizer on reclaimed strip mine land.
