Wildlife & Nature
Kimball State Park provides recreation in Oregon\’s southern Cascades — near the headwaters of some of the state\’s most pristine waterways. The park\’s ponderosa pine forest — characterized by widely spaced, fire-resistant trees with distinctive cinnamon-colored bark — represents the dry-side forest ecosystem that historically depended on frequent, low-intensity fires. A century of fire suppression has allowed dense understory growth, increasing the risk of catastrophic wildfire. Restoration thinning and prescribed burning aim to return the forest to its historical condition. White-headed woodpeckers — specialists of ponderosa pine forests — pry seeds from pine cones with their chisel-like bills. Pygmy nuthatches nest communally in tree cavities, sometimes with 100+ birds sharing a single roosting tree for warmth.
