Insider Tips

🏔️ Local Knowledge

  • Moonbow at Cumberland Falls: One of only a few places in the Western Hemisphere where you can see a lunar rainbow. Occurs during full moon periods when mist from the falls creates a rainbow in moonlight. Check the park’s moonbow schedule online. Best viewing: stand on the upper observation deck. Note: DuPont Lodge and campground closed for 2026 renovations — cabins remain open.
  • Natural Bridge sky lift shortcut: The sky lift (Apr–Oct) carries you near the 78-ft natural arch — perfect for families or those wanting a shorter hike. The nearby town of Slade has local restaurants. Spring and fall offer the best weather; summer brings heat and crowds.
  • Carter Caves underground waterfall: Cascade Cave has a stunning 30-foot underground waterfall. Guided cave tours are a must. The park has 20+ miles of surface trails for hiking and mountain biking. Equestrian sites include full hookups (electric, water, sewer) and are open year-round.
  • Jenny Wiley elk viewing: Organized elk viewing tours are a unique draw — eastern Kentucky is one of the few places east of the Mississippi with free-roaming elk herds. Campground closed through June 2026 for renovations; lodge and cottages remain open.
  • Camper Appreciation Weekend: April 24–25, 2026 — buy one night, get one free at all Kentucky state park campgrounds. Mark your calendar.
  • Red River Gorge world-class climbing: While technically national forest land, the Red River Gorge accessed through Natural Bridge SRP is a world-renowned rock climbing destination with 3,000+ routes. Treehouses and yurts available from private operators in the gorge.
