Eastern Kentucky — Mountains
Natural Bridge State Resort Park showcases a massive 78-foot sandstone arch accessible by trail or sky lift (operates Apr–Oct). Hemlock Lodge has 35 rooms with private balconies overlooking the gorge, plus 11 cottages (1–2 bedroom, some pet-friendly). Two campgrounds offer 82 sites with hookups + 12 primitive, open mid-March through October. Gateway to the Red River Gorge — world-class rock climbing, hiking, and kayaking. Carter Caves State Resort Park features 20+ caves including Cascade Cave with a 30-foot underground waterfall. Lodge (28 rooms with balconies) plus 11 cottages (some with fireplaces) and 89 campsites including equestrian. Breaks Interstate Park (shared with Virginia) — the “Grand Canyon of the South” — 5-mile-long, 1,600-foot-deep canyon. Central Kentucky — Waterfalls & Caves
Cumberland Falls State Resort Park — the “Niagara of the South” — a 125-foot-wide waterfall and one of only a few places in the Western Hemisphere to see a moonbow (lunar rainbow during full moons). Historic DuPont Lodge (51 rooms) plus 25 cabins with fireplaces. ⚠️ 2026 Update: DuPont Lodge closed for renovations (Dec 2025); campgrounds closed entire 2026 season for upgrades — cabins remain open. Lake Cumberland State Resort Park has resort lodging on a 63,000-acre lake with 1,255 miles of shoreline.
Bluegrass Region
Fort Boonesborough State Park recreates Daniel Boone’s 1775 frontier fort — living history demonstrations. My Old Kentucky Home State Park preserves Federal Hill, inspiring Stephen Foster’s famous song — musical performances and tours. White Hall State Historic Site is the home of abolitionist Cassius M. - Moonbow at Cumberland Falls: One of only a few places in the Western Hemisphere where you can see a lunar rainbow. Note: DuPont Lodge and campground closed for 2026 renovations — cabins remain open.
