Park Lodges & Fees
West Virginia state parks are free to enter — no gate fees or vehicle passes required. Like neighboring Kentucky, the Mountain State is known for its 9 resort lodge parks with full-service accommodations, dining, and recreation. Lodge parks include Canaan Valley, Stonewall Jackson Lake, Pipestem, Hawks Nest, Cacapon, Twin Falls, Tygart Lake, Blackwater Falls, and North Bend. Camping fees range from $15–$35/night. Cabin rentals are available at many parks. The WV State Parks Loyalty Program rewards frequent guests.
Parks by Region
Eastern Panhandle & Potomac Highlands
Canaan Valley Resort State Park sits at 3,200 feet — one of the highest valleys east of the Rockies — offering skiing in winter and outstanding birding year-round. Blackwater Falls State Park features a dramatic 57-foot waterfall plunging into a canyon of dark amber waters, plus some of the best fall foliage in the East. Seneca Rocks (part of the Monongahela NF but worth mentioning) towers nearby. Lost River State Park offers the Lee White Sulphur Cabin and forested mountain trails.
New River Gorge Region
Babcock State Park is the most photographed spot in West Virginia, thanks to the iconic Glade Creek Grist Mill. Hawks Nest State Park overlooks the New River Gorge with an aerial tramway and lodge. Pipestem Resort State Park features two lodges, an aerial tram descending 3,600 feet into Bluestone Gorge, and championship golf.
Central Mountains
Holly River State Park is the second-largest state park at 8,294 acres of remote Appalachian wilderness. Stonewall Jackson Lake State Park offers a modern resort lodge on a 2,650-acre lake. Watoga State Park — West Virginia’s largest at 10,100 acres — is known as the “Vacation State Park” for its cabins and classic CCC architecture.
Northern Panhandle & Ohio Valley
Oglebay Resort (city park, not state) anchors the Wheeling area, but Tomlinson Run State Park offers rugged hiking near the Pennsylvania border. North Bend State Park features the North Bend Rail Trail and lodge accommodations. Beech Fork State Park near Huntington provides lakeside camping and 20 miles of trails.
