Parks by Region

Potomac Highlands — Mountain Wilderness

Canaan Valley Resort State Park sits at 3,200 feet — one of the highest valleys east of the Rockies. In winter, it’s a full ski resort with 47 runs, snow tubing, and cross-country skiing. In summer, it transforms into a birding paradise with sub-alpine bogs, guided nature walks, and championship golf. The lodge has an indoor pool, fitness center, and full dining. Blackwater Falls State Park features its namesake 57-foot waterfall plunging into a canyon of dark amber-stained water (tannins from hemlock and red spruce). The lodge perches on the canyon rim with waterfall-adjacent rooms. The nearby Elakala Falls cascade is a photographer’s paradise. On Bridge Day (October), thousands watch BASE jumpers leap from the New River Gorge Bridge.

New River Gorge Region

Babcock State Park is the most photographed spot in West Virginia — the iconic Glade Creek Grist Mill (a 1976 recreation using parts from old mills) is stunning in every season, especially during October foliage. Hemlock forest trails wind along Glade Creek with swimming holes. Hawks Nest State Park overlooks the New River Gorge (now a National Park) with an aerial tramway descending to jet boat tours on the river below. Pipestem Resort State Park is the grandest — two full lodges (McKeever Lodge at the rim and Mountain Creek Lodge at the canyon floor, connected by a 3,600-foot aerial tram), championship golf, horseback riding, and an outdoor pool complex. The tram ride into Bluestone Gorge is spectacular.

Central Mountains

Stonewall Jackson Lake State Park offers the most modern resort in the system — a contemporary lakeside lodge on a 2,650-acre lake with spa services, an indoor pool, and an Arnold Palmer Signature golf course. Watoga State Park — West Virginia’s largest at 10,100 acres — is the classic “Vacation State Park” with CCC-built cabins, a swimming pool, and miles of backcountry trails. Holly River State Park offers 8,294 acres of remote Appalachian wilderness with some of the most secluded camping in the East. Cathedral State Park protects the last remaining stand of virgin hemlock forest in the state — 300-year-old trees towering 90 feet overhead in a cathedral-like setting.

Eastern Panhandle & Ohio Valley

Cacapon Resort State Park has a historic lodge, 18-hole golf course, and the Old Inn dining room in a mountain setting near Berkeley Springs (America’s oldest spa town). North Bend State Park sits along the 305-mile North Bend Rail Trail — one of the longest rail-trails in America. Beech Fork State Park near Huntington provides lakeside camping with 275 sites and 20 miles of trails. Lost River State Park offers the historic Lee White Sulphur Cabin and forested mountain retreat.

Booking tip: WV lodge parks offer exceptional value compared to private resorts — expect rates 30-50% below comparable private lodges. Pipestem and Canaan Valley are the most popular and book months ahead for peak foliage (mid-October) and ski season. The WV State Parks Loyalty Program rewards frequent guests with discounts. Lodge dining rooms are open to non-guests — make dinner reservations during peak season. Check wvstateparks.com for seasonal packages (romance, adventure, family).

Insider Tips

🏔️ Local Knowledge

  • Lodge value play: WV’s 9 resort lodge parks are 30-50% cheaper than equivalent private resorts. Stonewall Jackson Lake’s spa and Arnold Palmer golf course, Pipestem’s dual-lodge aerial tram, and Canaan Valley’s ski resort would cost significantly more at private destinations. Book directly at wvstateparks.com for best rates.
  • Babcock Grist Mill timing: The Glade Creek Grist Mill is WV’s #1 photo spot. Visit at sunrise for perfect light and no crowds, or during mid-October foliage peak for the iconic postcard shot. The mill actually grinds cornmeal on select days — check the schedule.
  • Blackwater amber water: The water at Blackwater Falls is naturally dark amber — not polluted, but stained by tannins from hemlock and red spruce. The 57-foot falls are accessible via a short boardwalk with stairs. Don’t miss Elakala Falls nearby — a cascading waterfall under a stone bridge, arguably more beautiful than the main falls.
  • Pipestem aerial tram: The tram at Pipestem descends 3,600 feet into Bluestone Gorge to reach Mountain Creek Lodge — the only lodge in a state park accessible exclusively by aerial tram. Dine at the lodge restaurant and ride the tram back up. Spectacular in fall.
  • Cathedral State Park: The last remaining virgin hemlock forest in WV — 300-year-old trees towering 90 feet. A 30-minute walk through this forest feels like stepping back centuries. Free. Easy trail. One of the most underrated parks in the East.
  • New River Gorge proximity: Hawks Nest SP overlooks the New River Gorge National Park (America’s newest NP, 2020). Combined with Babcock and Pipestem, this region is WV’s most destination-worthy cluster — plan 3+ days.

Can I ski at a West Virginia state park?
Yes! Canaan Valley Resort State Park has a full ski area with 47 runs, snow tubing, and cross-country skiing. It sits at 3,200 feet — one of the highest valleys east of the Rockies.
