Today, the Black Hills National Forest anchors a region of extraordinary density: Black Elk Peak, Cathedral Spires, Needles Highway, Spearfish Canyon, Sylvan Lake, Mount Rushmore, and the Crazy Horse Memorial โ€” all within a short drive of each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Black Elk Peak?

At 7,242 feet, it’s the highest point in the U.S. east of the Rocky Mountains. A 1930s stone fire lookout stands at the summit. Trail #9 from Sylvan Lake โ€” about 7 miles round trip, moderate to strenuous. Renamed from Harney Peak in 2016 to honor Lakota holy man Black Elk.

Are the Black Hills sacred?

Yes โ€” profoundly. The Lakota Sioux know them as Paha Sapa and consider them sacred homeland. The 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie guaranteed the Hills to the Sioux, but the 1874 gold rush violated the treaty. The land dispute remains one of the longest-running in U.S. history โ€” the Sioux have refused a $1.3 billion settlement, insisting on the return of the land.

What is the Mickelson Trail?

A 109-mile rail trail through the Black Hills โ€” converted from an abandoned railroad. 100+ bridges, 4 rock tunnels, connecting Deadwood to Edgemont through historic towns. One of America’s premier rail trails.

What is Spearfish Canyon?

A 19-mile scenic byway through towering limestone cliffs and waterfalls. Three major waterfalls (Bridal Veil, Roughlock, Little Spearfish), mountain goats, and some of the best trout fishing in the Hills.

What happened to the Homestake Mine?

The deepest gold mine in the Western Hemisphere โ€” 8,000 feet deep, produced 40+ million ounces of gold from 1877 to 2002. Today it houses SURF, a world-class underground physics laboratory studying neutrinos and dark matter.

Can I see bison?

Yes โ€” adjacent Custer State Park has a herd of ~1,300 bison. Drive the Wildlife Loop Road. Annual Buffalo Roundup in late September is one of the most dramatic events in the region.

Where should I camp?

Sheridan Lake for families (beach, showers, 129 sites). Horsethief Lake for Mount Rushmore proximity. Roubaix Lake for solitude. 30+ campgrounds throughout the forest. Book early for summer.

What about trout fishing?

Excellent. Rapid Creek below Pactola (catch-and-release, premier fly fishing), Spearfish Creek in the canyon, and multiple reservoirs. Rainbow, brown, brook, and tiger trout.

How long should I spend?

Minimum 3 days to scratch the surface. 5โ€“7 days to do it justice. The density of attractions (Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer SP, Needles Highway, Spearfish Canyon, Deadwood, Wind Cave, Black Elk Peak) is unmatched in the American West.

What is Devils Tower?

America’s first National Monument โ€” an iconic volcanic monolith in nearby Wyoming (~2 hours from the Black Hills). Premier rock climbing destination. Sacred to multiple Plains tribes.
