🐢 America’s Longest Undeveloped Barrier Island – Updated 2025

70 Miles of Wild Texas Coastline

Padre Island National Seashore protects 70 miles of pristine coastline along the Texas Gulf Coast—making it the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world. Unlike the developed resort strip of South Padre Island, this is raw, wild, untouched beach.

This is a place for adventurers: drive your truck on the sand, camp under the stars within earshot of crashing waves, and watch endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles nest and hatch on the same beach where Spanish galleons once ran aground.

Sea Turtle Conservation 🐢

Padre Island is the most important nesting site for the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle—the world’s most endangered sea turtle species—in the United States.

  • Nesting Season: April – early July (unusually, they nest during the day).
  • Hatchling Releases: Public releases typically occur mid-June through August at 6:45 AM on Malaquite Beach. Call the Hatchling Hotline: (361) 949-7163 for daily updates.
  • What to Do if You See a Turtle: Do not disturb it. Report sightings to 1-866-TURTLE-5.

One of the unique features of Padre Island NS is that you can drive on the beach.
