Hocking Hills & Southeast Ohio

Hocking Hills State Park is Ohio’s crown jewel and #1 most popular park — dramatic sandstone gorges, waterfalls, and recess caves including Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave (the largest recess cave in Ohio), and Cedar Falls. The spectacular new Lodge at Hocking Hills features 81 rooms, a full-service restaurant, indoor and outdoor pools, hot tub, and veranda views. Full-sized cabins with fireplaces and screened porches connect to lodge amenities. Budget-friendly Sherman Cabins offer electric, A/C, heat, mini-fridge, and microwave (shared bathhouse nearby). Burr Oak State Park has a remote lodge with panoramic Appalachian views. Lake Hope State Park offers secluded lake camping in Zaleski Forest.

Northeast Ohio & Lake Erie

Salt Fork State Park — Ohio’s largest state park — features a 148-room lodge with two restaurants, indoor/outdoor pools, hot tub, tennis, basketball, and arcade. 212 campsites and dog-friendly cabins. Geneva State Park offers a Lake Erie lodge with marina access. Headlands Beach State Park has Ohio’s longest natural sand beach. Punderson State Park surrounds a glacial lake with year-round lodge and activities. Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park features dramatic rock formations and tight crevasses.

Mohican & Central Ohio

Mohican State Park — Ohio’s canoe capital — has a family lodge, river cabins, and access to Class II–III rapids on the Clear Fork River. Preferred Cabins include heat, A/C, full kitchen, fireplace, screened porch, and some are pet-friendly. 50+ miles of multi-use trails including challenging mountain biking. Amish Country is 30 minutes away. Alum Creek State Park near Columbus has Ohio’s largest inland swimming beach. Deer Creek State Park offers a lodge with golf course.

Southwest Ohio & Miami Valley

Hueston Woods State Park has a resort lodge with indoor pool, nature center, fossil hunts, and a rare old-growth beech-maple forest. John Bryan State Park features Little Miami River gorge with rock climbing. Caesar Creek State Park allows fossil hunting — visitors can collect Ordovician-age marine fossils (450 million years old). East Fork State Park has a large lake with swimming beach near Cincinnati.

Northwest Ohio & Great Black Swamp

Maumee Bay State Park offers a lodge with indoor pool, boardwalk trails through marshes, beach, and nature center — one of the best family-friendly parks in the system.

Insider Tips

🏆 Local Knowledge

  • Gold Medal Award winner 2025: Ohio beat finalists including Florida and Wyoming for the NRPA Gold Medal — the nation’s most prestigious parks award. With free entry, 8 resort lodges, hundreds of cabins, and 55M annual visitors, the recognition is well-deserved.
  • Hocking Hills one-way trails: Popular trails at Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls, and Ash Cave now use one-way routing for safety. Plan your loop accordingly. The frozen waterfalls in January–February are equally spectacular — and far less crowded than summer.
  • Sherman Cabins = budget gold: Available at Hocking Hills, Mohican, and other parks — electric, A/C, heat, mini-fridge, and microwave for $45–$70/night. Shared bathhouses are nearby and well-maintained. Pack meals to save on food. The smart alternative to tent camping.
  • Caesar Creek fossil hunting: Free fossil collecting at the emergency spillway — Ordovician marine fossils (450 million years old). Brachiopods, trilobites, and horn coral. Ask at the visitor center for current access points.
  • Mohican = Ohio’s canoe capital: The Clear Fork River offers Class II–III rapids through the gorge. Multiple local outfitters provide canoe/kayak/tube rentals. Combine river time with 50 miles of trails and the covered bridge. Amish Country is 30 minutes east.
  • Salt Fork Lodge tip: Book a lake-view room on the upper floors. The Timbers restaurant serves generous portions — worth the dinner. Pontoon boat rentals available for lake exploration. Allow 20 minutes to drive in/out from the lodge.
