In-Depth Guide to Washington State Parks

Washington’s 124 developed state parks stretch from the wild Pacific Coast to the volcanic Cascades and the sun-baked basalt canyons of the Columbia Plateau. With 41 million annual visitors and 138,000 acres, the Evergreen State packs extraordinary diversity — temperate rainforests, ice age flood landscapes, island archipelagos, and alpine lakes. The Discover Pass ($45/year) unlocks all of it, plus 12 free days annually when no pass is needed.

Parks by Region

Puget Sound & San Juan Islands

Deception Pass State Park is Washington’s most visited park — spanning Whidbey and Fidalgo Islands with a dramatic bridge 180 feet above swirling tidal currents. Over 300 campsites plus cabins: standard cabins (C2–C6, sleeps 5, electric heat, shared bathrooms) and deluxe cabins (C7–C8, private bathroom, shower, kitchen). 38+ miles of trails through forest and coastline. Moran State Park on Orcas Island (San Juans) offers 151 campsites on mountain lakes — climb Mount Constitution (2,409 ft) for 360° views of the islands. Kayak and paddleboard rentals available. Fort Worden State Park near Port Townsend features a historic military fort converted to vacation rentals — barracks, officer quarters, and lighthouse keeper’s house. Lime Kiln Point State Park on San Juan Island is the premier land-based orca whale watching site in North America.

Olympic Peninsula & Pacific Coast

Cape Disappointment State Park on the Long Beach Peninsula features two lighthouses, Lewis & Clark history, and dramatic headlands where the Columbia River meets the Pacific. Yurts, cabins, and historic vacation homes available (note: all campground/cabin facilities closed for major renovation through late spring 2026 — check park alerts before visiting). Fort Flagler State Park on Marrowstone Island offers secluded camping with 360° water views. Dosewallips State Park provides river and Hood Canal access with heated platform tents and cabins.

North Cascades & Mountain Parks

Rasar State Park in the Skagit River valley is the premier bald eagle watching destination in winter (December–February) when hundreds of eagles gather along the river. Rockport State Park preserves rare old-growth Douglas fir forest. Lake Chelan State Park provides access to the deep glacial lake, and Pearrygin Lake State Park near Winthrop offers warm-water swimming in the sunny Methow Valley.

Eastern Washington & Channeled Scablands

Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park sits below Dry Falls — an ancient waterfall 3.5 miles wide, 400 feet high, and 10 times the width of Niagara. During the ice age floods 15,000 years ago, it was the largest waterfall on Earth. Now a dramatic cliff rimming desert lakes perfect for swimming and camping. Palouse Falls State Park features Washington’s official state waterfall — a 198-foot plunge into a basalt canyon. Steamboat Rock State Park centers on a massive basalt mesa rising 800 feet above Banks Lake. Ginkgo Petrified Forest preserves ancient petrified logs with Columbia River views.

Booking tip: Washington reservations open 9 months in advance. Deception Pass, Moran (San Juans), and Cape Disappointment fill months ahead for summer. Fort Worden’s historic vacation rentals are unique — book as early as possible. Over 30 state parks offer cabins, yurts, or platform tents. Moran SP on Orcas Island requires a ferry reservation from Anacortes.

Insider Tips

🏔️ Local Knowledge

  • 12 free days a year: Washington offers 12 days when no Discover Pass is needed — including Earth Day, Juneteenth, Veterans Day, and Free Fishing Weekend (June 6–7). Plan visits around these dates to save the $10 day-use fee. The annual pass ($45) pays for itself after 5 visits.
  • Deception Pass bridge at slack tide: The swirling tidal currents below the bridge are most dramatic during tidal exchanges. Visit at slack tide for calm kayaking underneath, or at peak tidal flow for the dramatic whirlpools. Tidepools on the Rosario Beach side are best at low tide.
  • Moran SP ferry planning: Orcas Island requires a Washington State Ferries crossing from Anacortes. Summer ferry reservations fill weeks ahead — book ferry AND campsite simultaneously. Walk-ons rarely have issues; vehicles need reservations.
  • Dry Falls perspective: Stand at the Dry Falls overlook and imagine the ice age floods — a waterfall 3.5 miles wide (10x Niagara) thundering 400 feet into the valley below. The lakes in the basin below are the remnants. Best appreciated in morning light.
  • Cape Disappointment 2026 note: All campground, cabin, and yurt facilities at Cape Disappointment are closed for major renovation through late spring 2026. Day-use areas (lighthouses, trails, Lewis & Clark interpretive center) remain open. Check park alerts before planning overnight stays.
  • Palouse Falls golden hour: Washington’s state waterfall is most spectacular at sunset when golden light illuminates the basalt canyon walls around the 198-foot plunge. The viewpoint is a short walk from the parking area.
